Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Isaiah 6:1-8
Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5
Matthew 10:24-33

A reflection on today's Scripture:

There are some messages that Christ repeated over and over to His disciples.

One mentioned some 15 times in the New Testament is "do not be afraid." This is one of the several themes in the gospel of today. Does that mean, however, that we can be really casual about how we lead our lives? Of course not!

A trip to the library, a flip of the television button or to a local movie can plunge us back into history when life might have seemed much more dangerous. Most of us do not have to worry every day about being consumed by wild animals or catching an incurable disease. For some however, even in America, life on the streets can be perilous. Christ tells us not to be afraid of those who can harm the body, but of those who can harm our souls. This portrays a totally different scenario.

Who is around each of us who might harm our souls? When we consider this concept, perhaps we are living in a much more dangerous time than did our ancient and even more recent ancestors. We have to be so very cautious all of the time, to preserve the innocence of our souls. Temptations abound, due to the media, the nature of common speech today, attitudes, and ignorance about faith and morals in those around us.

How can we protect ourselves from these dangers? The answer is to stay close to Christ. He is our shield against the enemy who constantly seeks to destroy us. Today might be a good day to think about how we are doing in warding off the temptations constantly threatening us. We don't usually fall prey abruptly, but rather gradually begin to let our shield down to the enemy.

How are we doing?
