Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Hosea 14:2-10
Psalm 51:3-4, 8-9, 12-13, 14 and 17
Matthew 10:16-23

A reflection on today's Scripture:

How terrifying it must have been for the disciples when Jesus sent them forth to minister!

"Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves" was how He explained it. I have lived my entire life in the USA's West and I have seen what predators can do to sheep and, believe me, it is not pretty. In fact it may be one of the most violent and awful things to see.

Jesus did not use this description carelessly. He meant just what He said and the graphic nature of His words described precisely the kind of risk they were to face. When we look at what happened to the apostles and many saints who came after them who were martyred for the faith we know how some of their lives ended in such terrible violence.

However, the disciples were also given a promise. Those who endured would be saved and we know Jesus had a place for them in eternity.

In America today we do not face the potential violent reactions to our faith, but this is not the case throughout the world. Some people are still terribly persecuted for their Christian faith. But our Lord's promise remains for those who endure.
