Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
July 10, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Hosea 11:1-4, 8e-9
Psalm 80:2ac and 3b, 15-16
A reflection on today's Scripture:
The themes for today's readings are so profound that it is difficult to focus on just one of them!
From the First Reading we hear that God is moved with pity and will not let His rightful anger blaze up. From the Responsorial Psalm, the Israelites speak of how they long to see the face of God, which they say, will save them. And finally, in the Gospel we hear Jesus instruct His apostles to shake off the dust of any town that will not listen or receive them.
Together these selections from Sacred Scripture give us some important information about how we ourselves are to respond to the Word of God and how we are to react to the response of others.
First of all, we must acknowledge that God is not only a God of love and mercy, but also a God of justice. To do so, reminds us that God has the right to be heard, obeyed and praised and that failure to do so has consequences. Secondly, only by having an intimate association with God (seeing His face, being a literary expression), can we hope to be saved. And finally, the choice to listen and follow is ultimately left up to every person.
Having said all this, may we never grow weary of faithfully living or preaching the Good News, and never "writing off" people who don't, but commending them and the salvation of the whole world to the mercy of God.
My heart is overwhelmed,
my pity is stirred.
I will not give vent to my blazing anger,
I will not destroy Ephraim again;
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One present among you;
I will not let the flames consume you. (Hosea 11:9-11)
