Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
July 8, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Hosea 8:4-7, 11-13
Psalm 115:3-4, 5-6, 7ab-8, 9-10
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel. . . . (Matthew 9:13)
Nor indeed, has any such as this been seen in all the world. The world has had a great many religious leaders—good and true people who tried to follow God as best they could. They helped others to find God when His face was seemingly hidden in the murky land of the Israelites. These leaders offered many truths, but unlike Jesus they did not offer the one Truth. Jesus stands out from the crowd of prophets, seers, and saints because He saw and He knew and He told us the one Truth. This one Truth is God Himself, simple, undivided, whole and complete. Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel, nor in the world.
The Truth Jesus exposed for us, He also led us to and opened the gateway. Jesus taught us how to love the truth and love God who is our Father. This fundamental truth fills us with joy and with Hope. Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.
Indeed, in a land of human sacrifices, in a place where children were routinely fed to Moloch, in a time when most would rather kill another person than look at him, Jesus came forward and told us that the Truth is encompassed in love for one another. Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel, and is all too infrequently seen in the world today.
Let us look in wonder on this Truth, on the fundamental Truth of undivided triune love. This is the truth that makes us whole and helps us see. Let us spread this news, for truly, nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel—it needs to be better seen in the world today.
