Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 7, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Hosea 2:16-18, 21-22
Psalm 145:2-9
Matthew 9:18-26

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Courage, daughter, your faith has saved you. (Matthew 9:22)

Today's readings inspire joy, for they affirm God's everlasting love for His people. Hosea describes God's relationship with us like that of a husband given totally and faithfully to his spouse whom he desires to again receive with the same fervor as in the early days of their union.

Our Psalm for today tells us that God's love is a dynamic force that God pours out upon His children in compassion, kindness, graciousness and mercy. This implies that we, His children, should reflect His goodness in all our dealings with others. Love is a unitive life-giving energy that overflows naturally from those who commune with God in prayer and so keep Christ alive in this world.

Our gospel narrates two instances of loving communion between God and man through the divine person of Jesus. A synagogue official, grieving his daughter's death begged Jesus to bring her back to life. Meanwhile Jesus sensed in the crowd a woman suffering from a hemorrhage for 12 years who believed in her heart that if she but touched His cloak she would be healed. Jesus fulfilled her expectation and said, "Courage, daughter, your faith has saved you." At the official's home, the mourners ridiculed Jesus when He said the child was not dead but asleep. Then, taking her hand, she rose to life!

Although we may remain unaware of it, God still brings about many miracles in answer to our daily prayers. Our catechism assures this to be true by saying that, where God's desire and ours intersect, His power will be manifested.

O Blessed God, through Your Son Jesus, You raised the world to a new life in You. Make us sinless and keep us one with You, that our joy may be complete. Amen.
