Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 17, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Kings 21:17-29
Psalm 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 11 and 16
Matthew 5:43-48

A reflection on today's Scripture:

In today's Gospel reading, Jesus tells His followers not only must they love their countrymen, but they must also love their enemies and pray for their persecutors.

Wow! That's a hard thing to do Lord! You not only "talk the talk," as they say, but also "walk the walk!" After being spit on, scourged, humiliated and nailed to the cross You did the most extraordinary thing, You asked your heavenly Father to forgive those who had done these unspeakable things, because they didn't know what they were doing!

Dear friends, have we ever been as blameless as Jesus, the spotless Lamb - so undeserving of mistreatment? And yet He forgave his enemies and prayed to His Father for them.

O loving Lord, You told us we are to be made perfect as Your heavenly Father is perfect and then You show us exactly what that perfection involves. You, the image of the invisible God, gave us the perfect example how to love not only those who are easy to love, but those who hurt us and mock us and yes, even those who would murder our very mind, body and spirit.

Change my heart O God, make it ever new.
Change my heart O God, may I be like You.
