Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
June 12, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Kings 18:41-46
Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Sometimes after reading or hearing the Scripture readings of the day, I am left without any one motivating thought and feel that they have failed to speak to me in a concise and unifying way. It is not that each might not have some point, but the points they make don't seem to have anything to do with one another.
Perhaps it is some personality flaw that makes me long for Holy Scripture to suit me. It's like preferring certain music, or art, enjoying some,. unmoved by others.
When I am left unmoved, I more often just leave things at that, but when it is my day to write, I am forced, so to speak, to spend more time and energy to really hear the Word of God speaking to me, to find the core meanings and apply them in a way that makes them really fit.
What I discover is that I must do my part. I must read, ponder and pray. I must spend time, question and pray. I must wait, yearn and pray. Do you begin to see what is required, do you see the pattern?
Though God's Word can have an immediate effect, it is more often God's inclination to work on us in more subtle and evolving waysóways that take time for our slowness to adapt, our coldness of heart to thaw, our stubbornness to soften. Let us then continue with faithful reading of the Sacred Word, confident that God can work wonders with us if we give Him a chance.
"Thus have you prepared the grain, prepared the land, drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods." Psalm 65
Do you see what is required? Time, tears, tearing apart; a little cloud to form, rain to fall, seed to grow, tilling, blossoming, weeding, harvesting.
