Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
June 7, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Timothy 4:1-8
Psalm 71:8-9, 14-15ab, 16-17, 22
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Not only does Christ form us by His parables in scripture, but He does not hesitate at times to show what we call today "tough love."
In the Gospel reading we are warned by Christ about seeking places of honor and distinction in society. (Mark 12:38-44) This is so counter the culture of today, when much of what we see in the media and workplace is about "making it to the top."
That lesson given to us was followed by the famous image of the widow's mite, where Christ pointed out that a poor woman gave her all. She had a small amount to contribute in comparison to the wealthy, but He made sure His followers realized that her offering was of great value. This too is counter the culture of the day, when those who make donations at the platinum and gold standards are given all the public recognition!
Those are two significant teachings that Christ shared with His apostles and with us. How can we use those teachings in our own lives?
