Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
June 6, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Timothy 3:10-17
Psalm 119:157, 160, 161, 165, 166, 168
A reflection on today's Scripture:
The Lord said to my lord: Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. (Psalm 110:1)
As a youngster I went each Saturday to the public library for books on my favorite subject, astronomy, but was often frustrated; I could read the words; however the concepts they described often eluded me, and I hounded my teachers for answers.
The Scribes and Pharisees had a similar problem interpreting Scripture, yet their ignorance remained because they relied on their own natural abilities rather than seeking to have their hearts and minds illumined by the Holy Spirit.
In the above quotation from Psalm 110, Jesus reveals to His questioners their misconceptions regarding the Messiah's identity. Christ doesn't deny His descent from David but implies that the Messiah's parentage transcends a flesh and blood lineage. David, Jesus points out, addresses the Messiah as "Lord," a name reserved only to God.
To the present day there are those who see Christ as a gifted teacher, denying His divinity. Like the Scribes and Pharisees, their minds are darkened. They can't see Jesus as the Redeemer sent into the world by the Father to save it from sin. Indeed, they are blind to the human condition.
God's light and power given at Pentecost through Christ's Spirit are still operative and available today. Oh, that WE would seek His teaching now!
All-knowing God, illumine us with the flame of Your Spirit to unite us in your love and truth. Amen.
