Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 30, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Deuteronomy 7:6-11
Psalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8, 10
1 John 4:7-16
Matthew 11:25-30

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus tells us that we must love one another and in doing so, God remains in us.

We find it easy to love one another, our husbands and wives, our children, our families, our close friends and others we live our lives with. But I believe that a true test of our faith, and a true test of our Lord's commandment to love one another lies not in our ability to love those close to us, but to love those whom many in our society deem unlovable.

I have a friend who has felt a deep calling to a deeper ministry for years, perhaps even the priesthood. But he has never taken the leap. I have asked him many times through the years why this is, as I believe he would make a wonderful priest and his response to me has always been that he struggles with loving those who are difficult to love. In our further discussions in this he has shared with me that he has trouble loving violent criminals, particularly those who have harmed children. He also struggles with the terribly sick, those dying of AIDS in particular. Is his inability to fully love some people, a serious character flaw? I don't think so, as I think it is a trait many of us share.

Let us look at ourselves. Are we truly able to love the unloved? As St. Francis did, could we truly embrace and kiss the lepers of our world and see Christ in every one of them? This, I believe is a true test of what Jesus told us about love and as Francis overcame his fears and learned through God's graces to love all, we too can become the lovers God asks us to be.
