Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 27, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Peter 1:10-16
Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
Mark 10:28-31

A reflection on today's Scripture:

But many that are first will be last.

Peter starts in complaining again. "We've given up everything to follow you." Jesus hears it and responds characteristically--stop thinking about yourself and all that you have given up and all that you are missing out on. Start focusing on what is important, what is eternal.

Anything we seem to give up for Jesus is restored to us and greater measure heaped on. We give up family in our prayer time and then through prayer, our families grow more vibrant and loving. We give up opportunity for advancement in a job or in society and receive prominence in God's eyes and importance in the small things we are able to accomplish. We give up land and property and goods and in so doing stake our claim in the eternal lands, in the eternal riches and life of the world to come.

In God, there is no giving up of anything that really matters. We do not cease to love and care for and protect our families, our extended families, our friends, those whom we befriend who have no one else. When we love God first and properly, we love all of those around us in the proper way and, in fact, more than we could ever do under our own power.

Attention to God, prayer, fasting, giving alms, relinquishing our death-grip hold on the things of this world, enriches us beyond measure, makes us fit for the eternal things, and transforms us into His image. We become beacons in a way that is impossible when we are buried under the weight of all we have and own.
