Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 19:8-10, 15
A reflection on today's Scripture:
I do believe, help my unbelief. (Mark 9:24)
Today’s Gospel prompts us to examine the relationship between wisdom and faith. Although Jesus gave His disciples power to heal the sick and expel demons, they failed to free a boy from possession by an evil spirit that threw him into seizures. The child’s desperate father begged Jesus to heal his son while also admitting to Christ that his faith was weak, in need of help because he realized that God only answers prayers that come from hearts that sincerely believe in His power and loving, merciful wisdom.
When Jesus said, “Everything is possible to one who has faith,” He suggested that His disciples were unable to heal the boy because they prayed unwisely, while lacking both an unquestioning faith in God and in themselves. However, Christ’s statement should not be taken to mean that God will summarily perform every act that is asked of Him which is sought with perfect faith; for this would put limits on His divine wisdom to do what is best in a given case. Still, we should not fear to ask God with perfect faith, knowing that while God has the power to do all things, He reserves the choice of giving us that which is to the greatest good of all those it concerns. Wisdom and faith grow slowly as we develop a prayerful relationship with our heavenly Father and live in obedience to Christ Who is the Holy Word of God by our depending on the power of the Holy Spirit. James defines Christian maturity with growth in wisdom, truth, goodness, righteousness, peace, gentleness, sincerity and constancy of faith.
O Lord of Light, as we lift our hearts to you, teach us to pray wisely, with steadfast faith, knowing that all you give us is prompted by Your love and our greatest good. Amen.
