Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
A reflection on today's Scripture:
In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world. (John 16:33)
As parents, a difficult yet gratifying time is seeing our children grow up, leave for college, marry and perhaps move a distance from home. Children face the unknown with some fear, starting a new life with hopes of successfully meeting its challenges. Such is our human course.
Yet what may seem at first like a loss, eventually proves to be a gain; for the emergence of another generation brings new life and energy into the world. This process operates in Christ's Church; the young learn from their elders, and reach a measure of spiritual maturity in their knowledge of Christ that enables them to reflect His divine love and truth that will draw others to Him.
Today's Gospel is better understood in the context of all of John's Chapter 16 which promises an Advocate, His Spirit Who will guide them to all truth. Though persecutions may scatter them, their difficulties will actually work to spread abroad the Good News of forgiveness and salvation. Jesus tells them they will leave Him, but He will not be alone because the Father is always with Him.
Those who continue living in His love and truth will, through grace, share in His blessed work of conquering this world's evil. In doing so, they will fulfill life's purpose, disseminating the will to create a better world and give man hope of an eternity of peace and joy lived in God's loving Presence.
Blessed Redeemer, You have freed us from slavery to sin and given us the grace to share Your new life with others. Keep us faithful to reflecting Your goodness to all. Amen.
