Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
April 29, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 7c-8
A reflection on today's Scripture:
It is better for you that I go. . . .
Put yourself in the place of the apostles. Jesus has died a horrible and shameful death; you went into hiding as you began mourning. One morning an insane woman comes running up and tells you that she saw Jesus. And then, suddenly, He is there among you again. You are able to enjoy His company on Earth and learn from Him for a short time.
And now He tells you—I'm going away again—but it's really good for you. How your heart must ache. You've come to trust Him, but how much better to have Him with you, right there guiding you, permanently by your side. You cannot understand that with His departure He will become closer than He ever could be while on Earth. The gift of His body and blood which you can consume allows Him to enter you and dwell within. His departure means the sending of the Holy Spirit who will be one with you, guiding and leading as you allow Him.
So it is with us, none of whom have ever seen Jesus in person. And yet each of us has the privilege of knowing Him throughout our lives more closely than the apostles ever could until the end. What a friend we have in Jesus and how close He is to us through the gift of the Holy Spirit! We can be, through God's grace, His intimates throughout our lives—this was a gift bestowed two thousand years ago, that is as new to each person as is the dawn. This is God's promise of love acted upon intimately. The Holy Spirit is our sign of His continuing love and guidance.
