Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 115:1-4, 15-16
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Matthew Henry summarized today's Gospel by writing, "Love is the root and obedience is the fruit."
Jesus prepared His Apostles for His departure by telling them that they will prove their love for Him if they live by and teach His Commandments, and faithfully carry forth to all the Good News of salvation. Those who observe His teachings will be loved by the Father, and He and the Father will abide with them.
Indeed, Christ tells them that the faithful will have the Holy Trinity dwelling within them, for the Father will also send them the Advocate, His Holy Spirit who will remind them of and expand their knowledge of Christ's teachings.
In addition, the Spirit will imbue believers with a love for God and man that will empower their words to move those whose hearts are open to repent of and renounce their sins. Implied in today's Gospel is to beware of those who preach God's love but neglect saying that love is proven in us only if our lives are transformed in that love by obedience to God's Word.
The power of the Holy Spirit is shown in "Acts of the Apostles" when Paul and Barnabas healed a man crippled since birth and finally persuaded the heathen population of the town that they were not gods, but that they should only worship with them the One true God by giving Him all the glory and thanks for His merciful, healing love toward all.
O Gracious God, teach us to faithfully live in You so that You may live in us; then in the power of Your Spirit may we bear much fruit that brings You honor and glory. Amen.
