Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 7, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 6:8-15
Psalm 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30
John 6:22-29

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus said, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." (John 6:29)

Today's Gospel occurs after Jesus' miraculous feeding of a huge crowd by multiplying five barley loaves and two fish, both satisfying their hunger and filling 12 baskets with leftovers. Traveling to Capernaum, He saw that the crowd had followed Him, but He told them that they should not seek Him because He had fed them with food that perishes. They should seek Him instead because He does "the work of God" that leads them to eternal life. When asked what doing the work of God meant, Jesus told them to have faith, to believe in Him who had been sent to them by God.

Faith is often oversimplified as a purely mental agreement, believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of the World. Many do not see that "faith" is actually a matter of the heart, for it is those who desire to change for the better who will seek and accept this life-transforming gift from God. Faith brings the recognition that God is the Love that brought them into being for the purpose of participating in His love so they may bring His blessed life into this world and live harmoniously with God and neighbor.

From the time of Stephen's martyrdom recorded in the Acts of the Apostles to this present day, many minds and hearts still deny Christ, refuse to make the sacrifices that love entails and prefer to remain blinded by the sin that brings misery both to themselves and to others.

Merciful Lord, help us to fully embrace Your new life of light and love that You offer to us at Easter, that we may achieve the peace in which You created us to live. Amen.
