Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 1, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 4:32-37
Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5
John 3:7b-15

A reflection on today's Scripture:

You must be born from above. . . . (John 3:7)

This is one of those cases where the translation of the Bible obscures the intended reading. In most other translations, this line reads, "You must be born again." And if you read it that way, Nicodemus' reaction makes better sense than it does without that knowledge.

How can a person be born again? Throughout the Gospels, Jesus gives examples. "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it cannot give life." Without Jesus we are the unrealized seeds of something eternal and great. We cannot know the scope of this greatness or its extent—that only becomes apparent when we have been born "from above" through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus is the ground in which we grow; He is the "midwife" of our new birth. He shepherds us into the courts of His Father in the same way that our mothers shepherd us into the life we experience day to day. Because of Him, we can be born into eternity and experience life in an entirely new way.

When we accept Jesus by living the life He has ordained for us in accordance with the laws of God and the natural world God has made, we are born again into a life beyond this one. Often we cannot see the extent or nature of this life; we don't even know it exists. But if we believe it, the knowledge of belief puts the knowledge of experience to shame.

So rejoice that you are among those called to Him. Accept His new life and let it show through you, that others who are being called will see Him in you and long for what you already have.
