Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

March 4, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12
Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9
John 5:1-16

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Do you want to be well?

Too often we don't. That's the harsh reality. If wellness requires work, or giving up, or changing some aspect of our lives, it seems like too much. Too many people are in love with their spiritual cancersówith the foulness that the world has fed them and told them is a liberating truth.

But not everyone. God has called us as His children and one of the things we need to show the world is how much joy there is in giving up what has so long caused us to waste away. We are to go and tell the people of the world Who has wrought this great miracle for us. However, our reception is not likely to be markedly better than the reception Jesus got for healing, teaching, loving.

And even in that there is joy. When we are hated because of Him, we are truly joined to Him in His mission to save every person. When we are laughed at and ignored because of our faith and because of the message we bring, we can count that as our time bearing His cross. What's more important to realize is that the negative reaction we receive will be because the people we encounter know there is something deeply, seriously wrong in their lives and they don't know what to do about it. Accept the rebuff and offer love again. And again, and again. Eventually God will break through the hardened heart.

Know that those who love Him will be mocked. But also know that those who mock the people who love God can eventually be brought to love God themselves. That is the promise and the hope that we keep working for. That is the good news of Jesus Christ.
