Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
February 23, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Micah 7:14-15, 18-20
Psalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12
Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
A reflection on today's Scripture:
There are many messages one might take from this popular Gospel of today, commonly known as the "Parable of the Prodigal Son."
Everyone who is honest with themselves can relate to it, since we all sin at times. The primary message is that ours is a compassionate and forgiving God. (see Luke 15:1ff)
Unfortunately, with the status of the family structure today, fewer people may relate to this image of a loving, forgiving, earthly father. As a result, we might need to be the person who reach out to that "lost" person, show them respect and nurture them within the appropriate societal boundaries.
There are many opportunities out there in the world; we just need to open our eyes—and our hearts! For those of us who did have the gift of a loving and nurturing earthly father, let us show our heartfelt thanks to God!
