Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

February 22, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Peter 5:1-4
Psalm 23:1-3a, 4, 5, 6
Matthew 16:13-19

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I find it very interesting that Jesus chose Peter as the rock upon which His church would be built.

Let's face it, Peter is someone we can all relate to. He was a hard-working man who sought the truth and was subsequently blessed by the Father with a special knowledge of whom Jesus was. And just as important: he was imperfect.

There is that saying that "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." Well, that is not really the case with many of us and it certainly was not with Peter. After Jesus' arrest we find the man, upon whom an entire church would be built, denying that he knew Christ; and he denied him not once, but three times. On the surface one would expect more from a "rock."

But what is more important is what happened next. Peter made a mistake that many of us would have made in a similar situation. But he immediately realized what he had done, and repented making himself right with God once again.

We all know we are sinners subject to the same mistakes that Peter and other great people of the church have made. But do we really know the correct action to take afterwards?
