Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

February 19, A.D. 2008

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Isaiah 1:10, 16-20
Psalm 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21 and 23
Matthew 23:1-12

A reflection on today's Scripture:

For they preach, but they do not practice. . .

The scribes and the Pharisees have usurped the rightful place of the prophets and the givers of the law. They speak in the name of the prophets and they lay heavy burdens on the people, but they do not do what they say and so they reap their own condemnation.

How much better then, not to presume to instruct others in things we do not fully understand. Rather, let our instruction be love of the Lord. Let our law be Jesus Christ and His love for each of us. What instruction is more sublime, more perfect, more complete than this? What can we say to anyone that would transcend this gentle and perfect love?

Let our instruction be the way we live and love. Let our lessons be not in words but in actions that demonstrate the Lord who has taken up His throne within our hearts. Let us not usurp the authority that belongs to the prophets, the givers of law, those who are charged with plumbing and teaching the mysteries of God—their duty is large and too daunting for most of us. Rather, let us live the life that God has given each of us to live and in living it, learn to love one another just as God loves us. If our instruction is love, if the message we preach is forgiveness and reconciliation, if our actions speak for us, let them speak then of the gracious Lord, of the great and generous Father who welcomes the prodigals home.
