Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Samuel 5:1-7, 10
Psalm 89:20-22, 25-26
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness. (see Mark 3:29)
In today's Gospel, Jesus appears to contradict that God will forgive any sin by telling the scribes and Pharisees that they were guilty of an unpardonable sin by ascribing His good works to a power given Him by Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Their mindless statement constituted blasphemy against God's Spirit Who had been visibly working through Christ through acts that counteracted the devil's destructive works. Jesus tells us that logic should have shown these men their foolish contradiction, that Satan would endanger his kingdom by performing good deeds.
While it is true that God will forgive every sin, His act of mercy depends on a sinner admitting his error, repenting of it and resolving not to repeat it. Sadly the scribes and Pharisees, by persisting in their absurd accusations discrediting Jesus, slammed shut in their own faces, the door to God's forgiveness.
That Jesus countered these men's charges against Him was not done to justify Himself but in defense of God's absolute goodness and in an effort to save these men from their twisted, hateful thinking. Their sinful natures had rendered them unable to discern truth from falsehood or love from hate.
History is replaying this scenario right up to this very day. As we move further away from God's love and truth, we make up ridiculous rationalizations to justify the destruction and immorality we practice in every walk of life.
Almighty Father, direct every thought and every effort that we make in our daily lives. May we draw ever so closely to You, that we may never give You offense. Amen
