Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
January 21, A.D. 2008
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Samuel 15:16-23
Psalm 50:8-9, 16-17, 21-23
A reflection on today's Scripture:
N ew wine is poured into fresh wineskins. (Mark 2:22)
A key phrase in the First Reading relates to today's Gospel: "Obedience is better than sacrifice." Saul lost his kingship by disobeying God's command to destroy Amalek and all his holdings. However, for his profit Saul kept the livestock purportedly intended to be used as burnt offerings, an act doubly offensive to God because the animals were stolen.
In today's Gospel Jesus clearly states that He has initiated a new era in worship of God; He does not, under present circumstances, need to adhere to certain customs. He identifies Himself as the bridegroom celebrating His nuptials, a new life, in a union of love between God and man; while He is present, it is right that His friends feast, for a day will come when He will be taken from them. Jesus suggests the hypocrisy of fasting, for too often it does not signify a love for or obedience to God but only to create a public image of piety and self-sacrifice.
God, our Father, sent Christ into this world to reach into the very hearts of men by revealing His genuine, self-giving and obedient love, teaching them how to participate in that love and so become true children of God. God is not pleased by the superficial performance of certain acts or privations. He wishes us to develop fresh, pliable hearts capable of expanding with a fullness and an overflow to others of God's love.
Ever-present, loving Father, help us to embrace Your will wholeheartedly, that we will reflect Your kindness, mercy, truth and love to a world that knows no lasting peace. Amen.
