Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 John 5:5-13
Psalm 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
Luke 5:12-16

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I heard a wonderful homily recently from our Associate Pastor that made the people in the pews a bit uneasy.

He is from Zambia and brings a new perspective on things that we Americans do not always see. In this homily he told us how shocked he is that more than a few couples he marries do not continue to attend mass regularly after their marriage. He said he simply does not understand this and wonders why this happens, asking himself if it may be due to something he had done. As he pointed out, marriage is one of the sacraments and something that needs continual nurturing within the Church.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals a leper, freeing the man from one of the most dreaded diseases of the day and also from its terrible stigma. What is interesting, however, is that Jesus tells the man to do as the law says and present himself to the priest with the proper offering at the temple.

Although Jesus was bringing the good news, the people remained bound to do as their faith required. The healed man could have just as easily hurried off and celebrated his healing, bypassing the temple completely.

I believe there is a parallel between this healing and what our priest has noticed about some newly married couples. In both instances people have received a great gift from God and this requires some further action on their part, as part of their faith and also for the additional blessings it brings.

And this makes me wonder how many great gifts I may receive and yet fail to do what is required of me.

Perhaps this is something we should all take some time to reflect upon.
