Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

December 31, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 John 2:18-21
Psalm 96:1-2, 11-13
John 1:1-18

A reflection on today's Scripture:

What came to be through Him was life, and this life was the Light of the human race. (see: John 1:3)

This evening many will gather to celebrate the start of a new year, but few of these parties will welcome "the guest of honor," the One who has gifted them with "time." Most of us take this "commodity" for granted, seldom realizing how precious each moment is. Life is far more than performing our daily work, caring for our family, seizing a bit of relaxation or entertainment, or facing and solving the problems we encounter.

For Christians, all that happens in our days are opportunities to grow in our nearness to God. How do we face and perform our mundane tasks? Do we do them patiently, happily, out of love for God and others, or are we grudgingly resentful while performing work that appears unappreciated?

A French writer once said, "Hell is other people." One wonders how he dared face each new day, either in grinding, joyless encounters or in dark isolation and emptiness. Love cannot exist without joyful givers and recipients, but because of our propensity to sin, it is often difficult to develop healthy relationships.

However God has not left us without assistance, for through faith in Christ we can receive the grace, the light we need in order to love everyone, since we will then come to see them as God sees them, His precious creatures. Through practicing the unconditional love made known to us by Christ, we become as fully human as He was. Also, as participants in His divine traits, His love and truth, we will share in His glory.

O Heavenly Father, unite us in respect and love for one another. May this New Year bring forth into the world new life and goodness as we recognize the sanctity of all human life. Amen.
