Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

December 20, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Isaiah 7:10-14
Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
Luke 1:26-38

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today's Psalm is one of my favorites because it reminds me of the simple fact that everything belongs to the Lord, "The Lord's are the earth and its fullness, the world and all its people." (see Psalm 24)

I like it because it reminds me that nothing that I or anyone else has, really belongs to us. What we possess, or more accurately, what we have access to use, comes from God—all of it—everything!

To consider everything a gift and to be grateful for everything, makes for a happy heart. It takes away the scourge of worthless ambition and puts in perspective the things that matter—things that will endure.

In addition, the Psalm nicely tells us that those who reach the summit and are able to stand in God's presence are the ones who do not desire what is worthless or have conspired against their neighbor.

The question for us to ponder is, when is it, in the normal course of our activities, that we conspire against our neighbor or desire worthless things? Think about it, meditate on it and see that it could be at any moment of the day, with any decision we make or action we consider.

Often then, we too, might be tempted to be like so many who want worthless things, except that we have been given the grace to know that nothing except what the Lord desires is worthwhile.

And what is it, then, that the Lord desires? It is that we come to know and love Him and our neighbor and that one day we might all stand on His holy Mountain full of awe and praise!
