Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
November 27, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Daniel 2: 31-45
Daniel 3: 57-61
Luke 21: 5-11
A reflection on today's Scripture:
See that you not be deceived for many will come in my name. Do not follow them. (see Luke 21:8)
History records the rise and fall of many kingdoms; each of them was centered on a vocal, charismatic leader capable of rallying people to his support by promising to make their nation supreme over all the world. But, as the saying goes: "Power corrupts . . . ."
Today this scenario is being played out in various locations throughout the world. Autocrats seem to ignore that history predicts their eventual downfall, for the spirit of man will in time rise up against them and their falsehoods.
Daniel interpreted the king's dream that earthly kingdoms will come and go, but only one will prevail; the kingdom of God will crush each under His truth and love. In response the king declared belief in Daniel's God, showing that salvation is open to all with a humble, loving and obedient heart.
In today's Gospel, Jesus speaks of two events. He first predicts the destruction of the Jerusalem temple, an event history records as having taken place in 70 AD by the Romans to punish the rebellious Jews.
Jesus then speaks of the Parousia, Christ's triumphant Second Coming to assume His power--"Good" definitively conquering every evil. He warns His followers that they will be reviled, persecuted and jailed for their faith in Him; also, they will witness many wars and fearful natural disasters.
False prophets will rise up claiming to be the Savior, but they are not to be duped by them. Jesus assures His faithful that He is ever with them, and by their perseverance through suffering, they will secure eternal life.
O merciful God, through Christ our King You have broken the power of evil and make all things new. Open all our hearts and fill them with Your love, truth, justice and peace. Amen.
