Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Maccabees 2:15-29
Psalm 50:1b-2, 5-6, 14-15
Luke 19:41-44

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Offer to God praise as your sacrifice
Then call upon me in time of distress;
and fulfill your vows to the Most High;
I will rescue you, and you shall glorify me. (Psalm 50:14-15)

God asks us to offer our praises and sacrifices to Him. In the Old Testament sacrifices were often offered in the form of holocausts (burnt offerings); we no longer need to do this because Jesus became the sacrificial lamb when He died for us on the cross. Yet God still asks of us sacrifices.

In the reading from the first book of Maccabees we see that he is asked to offer a sacrifice which is normally given only to God to be done for the king of the land. Mattathias is promised gold, silver, and to be numbered as one of the kingís friends only if he performs this sacrifice. He chooses to follow God and go against the kingís wishes in order to defend God.

We are faced with situations that will force us to make very difficult decisions. Just like Mattathias we must decide if the action that we will take praises God or offends Him. Sometimes the choice to follow and "fulfill the vows that we made to the Most High" means that we will have to accept some sort of suffering, embarrassment, rejection, misunderstanding, etc.

These sufferings are never lost because they can be offered as sacrifice and praise to God our Father. When we choose to follow Godís commandments, He is never far from us, and if we ask, He will rescue us from the misery which we suffer, ensuring our final reward, Heaven, where we will be filled entirely with Godís pure love.
