Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

November 13, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Wisdom 2:23 -- 3:9
Psalm 34:2-3, 16-19
Luke 17:7-10

A reflection on today's Scripture:

When you have done all you have been commanded, say, "We have done what we were obliged to do." (Luke 17:10)

Our reading from Romans reveals that God's primary concern for us, whom He created in His holy image, is to cleanse us of sin and imbue us with His love and truth.

Sin mars our souls: it renders our minds unable to distinguish right from wrong; it hardens hearts, makes them incapable of loving others unselfishly.

When we first receive Christ, we enter a "honeymoon" phase, often experience emotional "highs," pray fervently and worship zealously. But soon, God tests this highly charged devotion to prove its genuineness; for Christ calls us to love both God and man with His divine and totally self-giving love regardless of our circumstances or unpleasant personal encounters.

True Godly love strengthens when tested; it does not wither and die in adversity.

This relates to today's Gospel in an interesting way. When we were children being raised by our parents to become generous, truthful, kind, obedient and responsible, they often rewarded our successes with praise until we finally realized that such behavior is the normal, everyday demeanor of civilized people.

Sadly, many never make this transition and become petulant, critical, ornery and childish if they are not admired for simply fulfilling their duties as required by God's law of love. Emulate Christ, the most faithful of all servants; our selfless love of others will not only honor God, it also fulfills our very purpose for "being."

Almighty Father, support us in the burdens and challenges of life; shield our minds and hearts from distortions and pride that we may always reflect Your goodness. Amen.
