Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
November 9, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12
Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9
1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
A reflection on today's Scripture:
In today’s Readings, culminating in the Gospel, we see a thumbnail sketch of how ordinarily we come to believe. Initially it seems to begin with some kind of image, like that of flowing water from the Temple.
Then in time with God’s grace and our cooperation and openness to His grace, the image of flowing water becomes associated with other realities, not only of our faith journey, but life itself. We begin to appreciate perhaps the cleansing waters of Baptism and see in our own human experiences—like unusual droughts and blazing brush fires—the necessity, the value and indeed the blessing of water.
Finally, in the Gospel we recognize how realities that were at first just quickly passing images become concrete and operative in light of the Gospel.
Though the apostles had the advantage of the incarnate Son of God in their midst, it wasn’t until after the resurrection that everything they heard or saw fell into place and had lasting meaning.
So too for us. Though we have been prepared by words and images to receive what God desires us to know and believe, it isn’t until we acknowledge the resurrected Jesus in our own spirits that we begin to see how everything fits into place.
There are no idle experiences of God, His creation, His Word, the Life, Death and Resurrection of His Beloved Son—they all work to bring us to salvation.
Come! Behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things He has wrought on earth. (see Psalm 46:9)
