Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
Octomber 31, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 13:4-5, 6
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Will Only a Few Be Saved? (see: Luke 13:23)
We don't know how many will go to see God. But we need to hope and to live and to work as though every one of them depended on us. We need to bring God to those who do not know Him well.
And as important, we need to remember those departed souls who long for God and now spend the weary hours, days, and years in suffering. We are entering into November when we remember first all those who went to God as his close and dear Friends, and then all of those who have gone to God and who may still be waiting to see Him.
Dante describes the throng of those in Purgatory as
". . . that press of shades whose one prayer is that others pray,
and so advance them toward their blessedness. . . ."
These are souls that are heaven-bound and completely reliant upon our efforts here on earth to advance their own. In a way, we can help the numbers in heaven increase. We can do that now, by introducing living souls to the truth of God's love. And we can do that now, by praying for the souls of the faithful departed that they might enter into the light of God.
As we cross the threshold of October into November, make a commitment to help as many of these souls as possible. To read your Bible daily under the proper requirements and earn one soul's passage from suffering in light and hope to relishing the delight of God's presence. Or performing any other act that the Church has so indulgenced as to help the poor souls on their way to heaven.
