Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Octomber 12, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2
Psalm Ps 9:2-3, 6 and 16, 8-9
Luke 11:15-26

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Every year our Carmelite Community has a retreat during the 2nd weekend of October and it seems like today's Gospel is always the one that is read.

You know, there are some Gospels I just don't like and wouldn't mind if I never heard them again. Today's is one of those "never mind hearing it again" ones.

Maybe it's the word Beelzebul (or Beelzebub) which sounds so silly, or maybe it's the core message that unknowingly hits a raw nerve like scratching one's fingernails on a blackboard.

Today we hear that if we don't replace the sinfulness that we have tried so hard to overcome with genuine holiness, something worse will come in and take its place. It's not a pleasant thought, but one I probably need to hear.

So then, if you find yourself not liking a certain scripture passage, give it a second hearing, so to speak. Maybe it will be for you as it was for me: a reading I really needed to hear and take to heart.
