Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Octomber 4, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Nehemiah 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12
Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11
Luke 10:1-12

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, "The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you." (see Luke 10:10-11)

There is also a popular expression: "Don't judge a book by its cover."

True! But still, you can tell a great deal from the cover. We can learn a lot simply from how a person looks, what they do and the people they are with. As a result, people go to extraordinary lengths to refine the image they project to the world and dedicate enormous amounts of time and energy to appear to be all the things society tells us they need to be: young—thin—happy—successful—smart, good!

Sometimes our real selves get so neglected and so buried under the image we so carefully construct to convince the world we are worthy of acceptance, that we cease to be that which our loving Father created us to be.

Today's Gospel reading reminds us that God does not call us to be rich and famous. Poverty for the disciples was freedom. It was the freedom to be able to leave behind whatever stood in the way of following Jesus.

Poverty, besides being freedom, besides being humility (honesty), was also love. Pure unconditional love for the sake of the Beloved—Jesus—Who emptied Himself and took on the form of a slave, becoming obedient unto death, even to His horrible death on a cross--all for love of us.

While the world may reject us, Jesus loves us to the end. He loves us even while we are still in sin.

And His love for us is without end . . . .
