Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Timothy 6:13-16
Psalm 100:1b-2, 3, 4, 5
Luke 8:4-15

A reflection on today's Scripture:

I grew up and still live in the western United States where agriculture was a part of nearly everyone’s life.

Stories from the Scriptures that deal with such topics always resonated with me. As I consider today’s Gospel, I find it is no different and it brings me to reflect on my home of the past 28 years.

Our home is on the high arid plains with little moisture, extreme summer heat and bitter winter cold. For nearly three decades I have tried to grow many varieties of trees and am now happy with the few trees I have been able to grow. But for each one I have now, at least five others have been planted and died over the years and as I reflect back I can see how the ones that made it are still alive.

The trees that grew to maturity are the ones I took time with, particularly with the soil. Starting with a huge hole to plant in, I filled it with soil mixed with mulch and plenty of nutrients. Then came water followed by staking the tree to help it survive the winter winds. The bottom line is they received a lot of care.

Today in His parable, Jesus tells us that seeds that fall on good ground bear fruit one-hundred fold. Our souls, like my poor Wyoming soil, need work to become good ground. This starts out with a large hole that needs to be filled with faith and prayer. Then comes the water of life, Jesus, as found in the Eucharist. Finally we stake our souls firmly against the winds of temptation and sin with the support of the whole church.

Properly cared for, our souls may—and will—become fertile ground in which the seed may take root and bear fruit for eternity.
