Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 18, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Timothy 3:1-13
Psalm 101:1b-2ab, 2cd-3ab, 5, 6
Luke 7:11-17

A reflection on today's Scripture:

The dead man sat up and Jesus gave him to his mother. (Luke 7:15)

Christ's words, "Many are called but few are chosen," can be applied to today's First Reading in which St. Paul specifies the criteria that should be used to choose Church leaders, indeed, all called to serve Christ in a public manner. Primarily, they are to be consistent and credible witnesses to Christ, faithful to His teachings in their private as well as public lives.

Having a dynamic or charismatic personality is not a sufficient qualification for holding a Church office. Such positions should be filled by those wholly motivated by their love of Christ in God and their fellow humans, those humbly dedicated to serving others rather than gaining personal prominence. Briefly, God's servants should reflect Christ both in word and deed.

As our Church calendar progresses, our Scripture readings steadily increase Christ's "credibility" as the One sent by the Father to save His beloved creatures and offer them eternal life in Him. Jesus the Christ lived a holy life in His human flesh. On the cross, in obedience to the Father, He put our sin to death and so conquered evil.

Christ's divine power over nature's forces reaches a climax in today's reading by His raising from death the only son of a widow. God's authority over all is also tempered with compassion. Christ's stunning act of divine power, for only God is the giver of life, caused the people to realize that in Jesus, God was visiting His people-that indeed "a great prophet lived among them."

O Creator God of all, we look to You in our every moment of need. We lift our hearts in thanks for hearing our pleas and lovingly ministering Your will to us for our greatest good. Amen.
