Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

September 8, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Micah 5:1-4a or Romans 8:28-30
Psalm 13:6ab, 6c
Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 or 1:18-23

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

However, I would like you to consider for a moment, another person in our very important Gospel reading today. We know very little about Joseph, but it seems from the moment he enters the Gospels to the last we read about him, he is confronted with nearly impossible situations. What a trial this must have been for him!

Even though we know little about Joseph, he serves as an excellent example for us. We hear today how, as a righteous man, he planned to handle the situation of his pregnant bride to be. But then, when God tells him to do otherwise, he follows without question.

As Joseph shows us in the Gospel, it is never wrong to do the right thing. No matter how awkward the situation might be, we are required to follow the Lordís commands. No matter how inconvenient, trying, expensive, exhausting and unaccepted by society, we are required to obey.

So, Joseph married Mary, took the boy Jesus as his own son, followed the law as he was taught and even fled with them to Egypt just as he had been commanded even when it would have been much simpler to stay put and do nothing, or to go back home and take up carpentry once again.

Like Joseph, we must carry the Lord with us throughout our secular world even when it is much simpler to stay put and do nothing, or when it is easier to choose a different road that seems easier.

I am thankful for good people like Joseph who show us the way--the right way--to react when faced with seemingly impossible situations.
