Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11
Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14
Luke 4:31-37

A reflection on today's Scripture:

God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation in Jesus Christ.
(see 1 Thessalonians 5:9)

St. Paul writing to the Thessalonians defined Christ's mission: In God's sacrificial love Christ died for the forgiveness of our sin, rescued us from spiritual death and offered us eternal life.
The Old Testament often uses the word "wrath" to imply God's vengeance on those disobeying His law. The New Testament emphasizes through Christ that God is a forgiving Father who yearns to be reconciled with His repentant children.

From Christ we learn that human suffering doesn't stem from divine wrath but from the wrath of sinful people. Sin dispossesses God, the only source of good, and invites Satan, murderer and "father of lies" to rule on earth. Consequently, devoid of love, we bitterly reap death and destruction.

Mankind's only hope rests on Christ's absolute power over demonic forces that in the absence of God rush to fill the vacuum in human hearts. Man's problem arises from God's gift of "free will"; for though He calls us to live in His divine love, He cannot force love upon us. We must see our need to espouse God's life and freely choose to live in Him.

Our choice to live in God stems the tide of evil forces trying continually to seduce us into selfish, loveless lives with empty promises of pleasure and success. Inordinate hunger for worldly gain leads to eternal loss. Only Christ, God's Word, the bread of life, can fully satisfy the healthy human hunger for love, joy, peace, justice and equity plus our hope for eternal life.

O Heavenly Father, fill us with the desire to please You through our living in Your love and truth. By obedience to Your will, help us guard all the "good" You have given us. Amen.
