Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 31, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
Psalm 97:1 and 2b, 5-6, 10, 11-12
Matthew 25:1-13

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today's Gospel tells us the story of the ten virgins and their lamps.

We are told that all ten virgins fell asleep, but only five had the presence of mind to have extra oil--a "contingency plan." Because they did not plan ahead, the foolish virgins ran out of oil and had to go buy more. They did not have a contingency plan.

We are told when they finally arrived they were not let in, not necessarily because they came late, but because as the Lord said, "I do not know you."

It will be so with us. We simply cannot get sloppy and just hope that we will be prepared for the Lord when He comes. We can however have a contingency plan that involves having a habitual loving relationship with God through daily prayer and good works.

This relationship will be the oil for our lamps; it will illuminate us so that God will recognize us and let us in. It is our contingency plan!

It is true, we do not know the day or the hour!
