Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 22, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Judges 9:6-15
Psalm 21:2-7
Matthew 20:1-16

A reflection on today's Scripture:

The last will be first, and the first will be last.

There is one way in which this can be read that is negative. Those who loved the Lord first and most shall be the final ones to enter heaven. But the essential message is far greater than that--those who call upon the Lord, at whatever time during their lives, shall be received by the Lord and given their due wage--eternal life.

Would we, like the prodigal son, refuse to see our brother or sister rewarded with eternal life? If so, then we would deprive ourselves of joy because God promised, "As you judge, so you will be judged."

Then, rather than worrying about what the wages of another are, let us instead work in the vineyard and enjoy the work of the day. Take satisfaction in the fact that by this work we have come to know Him and enjoy Him and His life in this world. Our reward is in the work itself--the wage is a gift--freely given to whom God chooses. Let us not begrudge it to any, but instead encourage all to come and take advantage of such foolish (in human terms) generosity. Let us celebrate this great generosity with all.
