Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 11
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today’s gospel is very short, but so powerful!
It says that children were brought to Jesus that He might lay His hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” After He placed His hands on them, He went away. (Matthew 19:13-15)
My wife and I have been blessed with two grandsons, one now four years old and the other only six months younger. The younger of the two lives in our city and we are fortunate to spend a great deal of time with him. It was not until these boys came into my life that I fully understood what Jesus was saying in this gospel!
These boys come to us and to their parents, in complete need and reliance. They rely on us; for all their existence depends on us and they fully expect, in complete faith, that their needs will be met. They have nothing to give us in return except their total and complete love.
They ask for what they need without reservation and are content with life as simple as it is for them. They are completely accepting of us and want nothing more than to snuggle into our arms and be loved. This is to be a child and this is how we are to come to the Father.
