Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
August 15, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab
Psalm 45:10, 11, 12, 16
1 Corinthians 15:20-27
A reflection on today's Scripture:
My Soul Proclaims the Greatness of the Lord . . . .
The Magnificat—the prayer said every day at Evening Prayer to remind us of the tremendous and powerful faith of the Blessed Virgin who said an eternal "Yes" to God and to all of humankind—is the prayer of a humble soul that feels the touch of God in her life. From Mary's lips, it has become our prayer, recognizing at once the greatness of God and the lowliness of each one of us in the face of that.
The Blessed Virgin proclaims His greatness and her soul still proclaims His greatness as she stands before Him in awestruck prayer. She is still astonished at the gift of Her Son. She remains humble, pure, virgin and is one of very few people assumed bodily into Heaven—the only person from the New Testament.
Today we celebrate that assumption—the pure and spotless maiden who gave Birth to Jesus Christ ascends into Heaven through the power of her Son and takes her place at the royal table. From there she spends all eternity dispensing the graces and gifts that God gives to all of us through her gracious hands. Through her assumption into heaven we can be pleased to call upon her, the Mediatrix of all graces. And as we do so, our souls should be like hers, humble and full of awestruck wonder at what God has wrought.
