Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
August 3, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Lv 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37
Psalm 81:3-4, 5-6, 10-11ab
A reflection on today's Scripture:
At the end of today’s Gospel we learn that because of the people’s lack of faith, Jesus did not work many mighty deeds in his own native place.
We must not be like Jesus’ townsfolk who acted hastily and drew conclusions using only their ingenuity. To them Jesus’ apparent lineage was so ordinary that they couldn’t see beyond what their senses revealed. As a result they failed to accept the Grace that was in their midst and missed the opportunity to know by faith things beyond mere human understanding.
We too are at risk if we do not nurture the gift of faith that we all have received in Baptism. God’s ways become more obscure and His action in our lives goes unnoticed and unappreciated.
Let us then do what is within our power to nourish our faith. Let us avail ourselves of the Sacraments of Penance and the Holy Eucharist which we know were instituted by Christ to give us grace—a share in the very life of God.
Armed with grace and faith we have no need to explain the unexplainable, believe the almost unbelievable—that God knows what He’s doing, even though most of the time we may not!
