Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 2, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Exodus 40:16-21, 34-38
Psalm 84:3, 4, 5-6a and 8a, 11
Matthew 13:47-53

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Better one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. Better the threshold of the house of my God than a home in the tents of the wicked. (see Psalm 84:11)

The world's tallest sandcastle was built on Myrtle Beach as part of the 2007 Sun Fun Festival. The structure was 32-1/2 feet high. The creation featured two dozen spires and was guarded by a pair of gargoyles. It took eight days to construct and used 130 truckloads of sand.

I have often wondered why people build these elaborate structures that are after all temporary and destined to crumble away. Contemporary society bombards us with a set of values based on material security, and judges our success by the extent of our possessions. By buying into these values, todayís readings remind us that we, too, are creating elaborate castles formed out of sandóbuilt on weak foundations that are easily washed away.

If we find ourselves desiring things of this world and not of the Kingdom of heaven, we must remember that we are made for another worldóthe Kingdom of God. By placing our trust in our eternal God and living our lives in loving unity with Him, we avoid these impermanent "castles" that are made out of that which is temporary and transient and we will be richly rewardedówith eternal life!
