Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 99:5, 6, 7, 9
A reflection on today's Scripture:
A Pearl of Great Price
The Kingdom of heaven begins now as we live and breathe with our choice to serve the Lord and Him alone. And this same Kingdom is a pearl of great price. Once we see it, we can have nothing less. Once we taste it, no other taste will be fulfilling.
Everything we have is insufficient to buy the pearl of great price; nevertheless, once one sees it, there is nothing else that will suffice and we sell all other things cheaply to have the pearl dearly. What Jesus says to us here is that the Kingdom of heaven, once experienced in the heart, cannot be replaced by anything of lesser value.
There is nothing on earth that comes close to the Kingdom, nothing on earth that resembles it. We know it immediately upon experiencing it. The Kingdom of heaven is the joy of service to God and it is more than that--it is the joy of being present to God at all times and in all ways.
It is, in short, intimacy with God and it does not start after death, but it starts here and now as we strive to grow ever-closer to God.
