Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 24, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Exodus 14:21 to 15:1
Exodus 15:8-10, 12, 17
Matthew 12:46-50

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, sister and mother. (see Matthew 12:50)

Our reading from Exodus demonstrates God's boundless power and His great care for the people He had freed from Egyptian slavery and chosen to make Him known to the world.

God temporarily parted the Red Sea to provide an escape route for the fleeing Israelites, and then closed the waters to drown the Pharaoh's pursuing army.

This "sign" of such powerful magnitude impressed His people, assured them, for a time, of His loving protection and strength to endure hardships.

Sadly, human memory is short and His people neglected to consistently express their thanks and trust through obedience to His saving words. This memory lapse still afflicts us today in our dealings with our Divine Father and our human parents.

In today's Gospel Jesus tells us that our name and bloodline do not make us members of a certain family. A family is determined and held together by the genuine, self-giving love existing within their hearts and freely, continually expressed toward one another.

Jesus Christ is God's most powerful and final "sign" of His boundless, everlasting love for humanity and His definitive invitation to become His children through adoption.

Christ will recognize us as His children if in faith we see and accept Jesus as His Son, God's living Word of life, and sincerely desire to grow in likeness to Him by obeying His teachings.

He has sent us His Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us as we learn to live in God's love and truth and so change the course of our mean spirited and destructive history.

O Father God, work in us that the gift of Your divine life of love and truth offered to us through Christ will grow in us as we respond in loving obedience to Your Spirit's bidding. Amen.
