Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 14, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Genesis 49:29-32; 50:15-26a
Psalm 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7
Matthew 10:24-33

A reflection on today's Scripture:

One thing I remember vividly about growing up in the Rocky Mountains is the many nights I spent outside gazing at the clear, unobstructed view of the sky. The lack of street lamps and other lights made the sky jet black and crammed with countless stars. I remember sitting for hours wondering how many stars were up there.

As I grew older, my fascination with the night sky only grew. I took an astronomy class in college and learned that there are billions of stars making billions of galaxies out there and that each of these stars was made of an almost infinite number of atoms.

Later when I began my formation as a Franciscan and began a deep study of scripture, it occurred to me how truly powerful God is. He created every single one of those atoms that make up those stars, planets, me and you, and He knows each atom individually.

But what is more important than the great size of God's knowledge is this: while He knows every atom of our being, every hair on our heads, He loves us each as His own and only as an all loving Father can love. He loves us and cares for us even when we don't always love Him in return, and that, my sisters and brothers, is more awesome than all the stars in a dark western sky.
