Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 17:1-3, 6-8, 15
A reflection on today's Scripture:
The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few. (Matthew 9:37)
Our Creator-God, Whose very essence is Love, instilled in us a hunger to love and be loved that prompts us to form relationships. Problems arose when sin, our willful preference of "self" over God, broke the flow of genuine, perfect love between God and man.
Now divorced from God's loving will, we perversely work to satisfy our "wants," often uncaring of hurting others and of grieving God. Christ was sent to heal our wounded relationship with our heavenly Father and so cure our adverse attitudes toward one another.
God, through Christ, invites us to surrender our "fallen" self-gratifying wills and in their place embrace God's will that teaches us to love one another as He loves us, sacrificially, unconditionally and steadfastly, even those whose behavior is far from loveable. In our sinful state we most often "love" only those who please our eyes, ears and egos.
Christ, in today's Gospel cries out against human selfishness and self-will that results in a scarcity of souls whose hearts are opened to receive and share with others God's divine, self-giving love. Many say they are hungry for love, truth, justice, equity and peace. But since they refuse to sacrifice "self" and draw life (love) from the Source of all Good, they and those with whom they come in contact are left to die of spiritual starvation. We may readily contribute money to charitable organizations yet fall far short in giving others God's "charity."
Loving Father, Your Son's death has given us new life; open our hearts to accept this gift of love, be filled with it to overflowing, and so share it with all those whom we meet. Amen.
