Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 6, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Genesis 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67
Psalm 106:1b-2, 3-4a, 4b-5
Matthew 9:9-13

A reflection on today's Scripture:

In today's Readings we hear three examples where clarification of orders or practices might be warranted. When Jesus gives an order, as in the calling of Matthew, "Follow me," Matthew doesn't ask any questions, but just does as the Lord commands.

On the other hand, the servant of Abraham does a fair amount of questioning to make sure he understands Abraham's instructions about procuring a wife for his son Isaac.

Finally, we hear the Pharisee asking the disciples why Jesus eats with tax collectors and sinners.

What is interesting is the frame of mind or disposition of spirit of the person asking or not asking questions. When the Lord speaks, those who are humble hear and accept without question. Matthew drops what he is doing and follows the Lord.

When Abraham's servant queries Abraham about details, it isn't so much that he's questioning Abraham's judgment or his right to give orders, but because in desiring to please his master he wants to make sure he gets things straight, right down to the smallest detail.

When the Pharisee questions, it is not so that he might learn about the mind and heart of the Redeemer, but so that he might trick Him and make a fool of Him.

Let these examples serve to set right our own thinking. When Jesus speaks, do what He commands. When those who have legitimate authority command us, let us make sure we understand what they desire and if it is just, let us do it.

And finally, if questioning others is just a scheme to exalt our own self-interests and image, be silent lest we like the Pharisees wish to exclude ourselves from the Kingdom which belongs to the humble of heart.
