Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 5, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Genesis 22:1b-19
Psalm 115:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9
Matthew 9:1-8

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus was given authority from His Father in Heaven to forgive the sins of man. He demonstrated that authority with power and compassion, performing one miracle after another.

Today, we learn how Jesus revealed this authority to the paralytic who was brought to Him on a stretcher by people with remarkable faith. Jesus acknowledged their faith, saying to the paralytic, "Courage, child, your sins are forgiven."

When the scribes accused Jesus of blaspheming because they believed only God could forgive sin, Jesus made known the full power of God which had been given to Him, saying to the paralytic, "Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home." And he did. The crowds were struck with awe and glorified God, who had given this authority to men.

Nothing has changed since the day the paralytic was healed over 2,000 years ago! Christ still forgives sins today through His priests to whom He has given the power to administer Christ's absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

When we approach God with reverence and in faith, carrying with us our stretcher of sins, He comforts and forgives us, and like the poor paralytic, miraculously heals us of our impediments. We walk away glorifying the power and sweetness of our merciful God, who continues to reveal His love for us through men.
