Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

July 3, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ephesians 2:19-22
Psalm 117:1-2
John 20:24-29

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. (John 20:29)

Faith, the theme of today’s readings, is a God-given gift to the humble, those realizing their own insufficiency, whose hearts yearn to live in a truth and love that gives them meaning and purpose.

Faith is blind, not based on visible evidence, yet it is a powerful unifying force drawing us to God, holding us together in His love revealed by Christ. St. Paul tells the faithful Ephesians (and us) that they (we) are the stones of a sacred temple held together by Christ, its capstone, and inhabited by God’s Spirit of love and truth.

St. Thomas, who witnessed Christ’s death, refused to believe his fellow apostles that Jesus, risen from the tomb, had visited them in His resurrected body. Christ gave “doubting Thomas” a strong infusion of evidence by appearing again and revealing His wounds, causing the astonished apostle to fall at His feet in worship.

If we agree to take a leap into the darkness of faith, God places people and circumstances in our lives to sorely test that faith. However, our consistently exercising it, trusting God through life’s vicissitudes, faith grows and strengthens.

Recall the staggering abuses heaped upon Jesus, His cry on the cross of feeling deserted by His Father as He bore the crushing weight of this world’s sin.

It was in faith that Jesus abandoned Himself to His Father’s will, that He accepted in His human flesh, suffering and death on our behalf and thus fulfilled God’s plan of salvation.

Christ’s self-giving love challenges us to die with Him to our sin and so share in His victory over death.

O blessed Lord, banish this world’s darkness, remove the scales from our eyes, that we may clearly see and thankfully, joyfully follow Your light that leads to eternal life. Amen.
